Word On The Air Ambulance Service

Our grateful thanks to  Julian Spiers from the Midlands Air Ambulance Service (www.midlandsairambulance.com) for his contribution to our radio report, which you can hear again via the audioplyer at the bottom of this page

What Are Air Ambulance Services?  Air ambulance services are specialist emergency medical services that provide rapid pre-hospital care and transport to critically ill and injured patients. Crewed by highly trained paramedics, doctors, and pilots, these helicopters can reach patients in hard-to-access locations — such as rural areas, motorway accidents, or busy city centres — faster than a traditional road ambulance.

In life-threatening situations, every minute counts, and air ambulance services often make the difference between life and death.

How Many Air Ambulance Services Are There in the UK?  There are 21 air ambulance charities operating across the UK, working alongside the NHS to deliver critical care where it’s needed most. These services cover England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, responding to thousands of emergency call-outs every year.

While they work in partnership with NHS emergency services, most air ambulance services are funded almost entirely by charitable donations — making public support vital to keeping them operational.

Key Facts About UK Air Ambulance Services

  • Over 70,000 missions are flown each year by air ambulance services across the UK.
  • Each air ambulance can be airborne within minutes, travelling at speeds of up to 180mph.
  • Crews typically include a pilot, specialist paramedics, and sometimes a trauma doctor.
  • Air ambulances are equipped with advanced medical equipment, effectively acting as an intensive care unit in the sky.
  • It costs, on average, £2,500–£3,500 per mission, depending on the region and clinical care provided.

Spotlight on Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is one of the busiest services in the country, covering six Midlands counties including Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, and the West Midlands.

With three helicopters and a fleet of critical care cars, they provide life-saving treatment at the scene of accidents and emergencies, significantly improving patient outcomes.

Like many air ambulance charities, they rely almost entirely on public donations, community fundraising, and corporate support to remain operational.

How You Can Support Air Ambulance Charities. Because the majority of UK air ambulance services are charity-funded, public help is essential. You can support them by:

  • Making a one-off or regular donation
  • Taking part in sponsored events or fundraising challenges
  • Donating to charity shops run by air ambulance services
  • Leaving a legacy gift in your will
  • Volunteering your time locally
